According to the World Health Organization, the immediate risks of female genital mutilation include-
- severe pain
- shock
- bleeding
- bacterial infection
- urine retention
- open sores and injury in genital region
The long term consequences are as follows-
- reoccurring bladder and urinary tract infections
- cysts
- infertility
- childbirth complications and newborn deaths
- re-opening and closing procedures caused by childbirth and sexual intercourse which results in experiencing the immediate risks as well as long term consequences over again
